Best Buy Air Fryer Recall Alert: Over 287,000 Units Pose Fire and Burn Risks

In a significant consumer alert, Best Buy has initiated a recall for more than 287,000 air fryers, following reports that they pose potential fire, burn, and laceration hazards. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) disclosed the recall, affecting four models of Insignia Air Fryers, after identifying risks due to overheating issues.

Key Takeaways:

  • Immediate Action Required: Owners of the affected Insignia Air Fryer models should cease usage to prevent fire, burn, or laceration injuries.
  • Models in Question: The recall encompasses Insignia Air Fryers and Air Fryer Ovens with model numbers NS-AF34D2, NS-AF5DSS2, NS-AF5MSS2, NS-AF8DBD2, NS-AF10DBK2, and NS-AF10DSS2.
  • How to Respond: Consumers are advised to verify if their air fryer is part of the recall at recallrtr.com/airfryer and register for a full refund.

The CPSC's announcement highlighted the hazards associated with the recalled air fryers, noting, “The air fryers can overheat, causing the handles to melt or break, posing fire and burn hazards. Additionally, the air fryer ovens can overheat and the glass on the door can shatter, posing fire, burn and laceration hazards.”

Reports to the commission have included 24 incidents of the air fryers overheating, melting, or their glass shattering, with six instances resulting in fires. These incidents underline the serious risk these products pose to consumers.

The recall targets Insignia models varying from 3.4 to 10 quarts, available in both plastic and stainless-steel bodies, finished in black or stainless steel. These units were available for purchase at Best Buy stores across the U.S. and Canada, as well as online, from November 2021 through November 2023. The distribution included about 187,400 units in the U.S. and an additional 99,900 in Canada.

Consumers in possession of these models are urged to locate the model number found on the product rating label on the underside of each unit. This recall serves as a critical reminder for consumers to regularly check their appliances for safety notices and recalls, prioritizing their safety and that of their households. Immediate action in response to recalls like this can prevent potential injuries and ensure a safer home environment.
