Prevent Hob Fires: Simple Safety Measures to Protect Your Home

Introduction

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service is urging the public to take its advice after a recent increase in hob fire incidents. Many of these fires are caused by children or pets accidentally turning on the hob. By following some simple safety measures, these fires can be easily prevented.

The Rise in Hob Fires

The fire service has seen a rise in hob fires, with 12 separate incidents reported this month alone. It is surprising how many of these fires are caused by children or pets accidentally turning on the hob. To prevent such incidents, it is important to keep the hob clear after cooking and switch it off at the wall when not in use.

Cooking-Related Fires

So far this year, firefighters have been called to 31 cooking-related fires. These fires can often be prevented by following cooking safety advice. The fire service hopes that by sharing these tips, the number of preventable fires will decrease.

Recent Incidents

One incident occurred in Blackmores in Laindon when a person fell asleep while cooking. The fire service was called to the scene and the person had to be rescued. Another incident happened in Birkbeck Road in Hutton when an air fryer was left on a hob accidentally, causing a fire. On another occasion, a hob was accidentally switched on, resulting in a fire.

Prevention Tips

Andrea MacAlister, head of prevention at Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, offers the following tips to prevent hob fires:

  1. Clear everything off the hob once you've finished cooking.
  2. Double-check that the hob is switched off at the wall before leaving the kitchen.
  3. Keep an eye on your pans while they're on the hob to prevent overheating.

Conclusion

Many cooking-related fires can be easily prevented by following these simple tips. It is important to be vigilant and take the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of your home and loved ones. By implementing these safety measures, we can reduce the number of preventable fires and protect our community.
